‘Val’ – Tea Stain Portrait from ‘In Your Hands’ – Conneally & Culhane 2013

Another element of ‘In Your Hands’, the performative installation / intervention by Conneally and Culhane, was the making of tea-stain prints made when the participants upturned their almost empty teacups onto blotting paper. They then went on to engage with the artists’ tasseography (tea leaf reading) ritual, as well as sharing stories and chatting in the process.

The artists present these prints back to the stainer and public as portraits of the participants at the moment of turning their cup upside down.

Here we have a portrait of Val who proved to be excellent at reading the tea leaves!

The raw stains, like this one, will now form the basis for a set of prints made by the artists.
