As I’m in and around Cannes for a month or so and spending some time in Nice I was drawn to a post on Facebook by Matt Black of Coldcut about Jean Vigo’s short film A propos de Nice – found it and its great… I’ll be in the Negresco over the weekend – it’s hardly changed!
Here’s the film which was a silent movie made in 1930 – it’s got some French accordion on it but you could watch it silent or add your own beats…
Vigo described the film in an address to the Groupement des Spectateurs d’Avant-Garde: “In this film, by showing certain basic aspects of a city, a way of life is put on trial… the last gasps of a society so lost in its escapism that it sickens you and makes you sympathetic to a revolutionary solution.”
